Study Design Highlights

The 1984 ANES featured a mixed-mode design for the post-election wave. Pre-election respondents were randomly assigned to either face-to-face or telephone administration in the post, using full face-to-face or shorter telephone questionnaires. In addition, 45 post-election respondents who were assigned to face-to-face mode were interviewed by telephone using an abbreviated version of the face-to-face questionnaire administered over the telephone. Another feature of the 1984 design is the repetition in the post-election interview of numerous items from the pre-election interview that were deemed to be campaign reactive, including traits, affects, issue questions, political efficacy items, party identification, and ideological self-placement.

Beginning September 4, interviews were conducted prior to the November 6 elections using a pre-election instrument averaging 76 minutes. Post-election interviews averaged 46 minutes and were administered November 7,1984-January 25, 1985. The sample included 3,132 eligible persons, among whom 2,257 completed pre-election interviews and 1,989 were subsequently re-interviewed in the post.
