The ANES Guide to Public Opinion and Electoral Behavior The ANES Guide provides tables and graphs which display the over-time ebb and flow of public opinion, electoral behavior and choice. Data are from the ANES Time Series studies.

The ANES Guide was produced from the ANES Time Series Cumulative Data File which combines, for selected questions, data from individual Time Series study variables into common, cross-year variables. Questions which have been asked during 3 or more years in the Time Series are eligible for inclusion in the Cumulative Data File.

For each new ANES Time Series study, questionnaire content consists of both previously-used Time Series questions and new items. The Questionnaire Utility is designed to be a handy reference for ANES users. It collects all of the questions that have appeared on ANES Time Series studies since 1992 and organizes them into broad categories. For each item, the Questionnaire Utility lists all of the years in which that question has appeared on a Time Series study dating back to 1952. Users may click on highlighted years in these lists (i.e., any presidential election year since 1992) to open a window that displays other useful summary information, such as the marginal distribution of responses in that year's study, whether the item appeared on the pre-election or post-election survey, the variable name in the dataset, and the wording of the question.

This utility searches ANES Time Series study codebooks to locate questions and variables by keyword. Search results can be full variable documentation or question text only.

Some ANES studies are available for analysis using software developed at the University of California, Berkeley, as part of the Survey Documentation and Analysis (SDA) archives of the Computer-assisted Survey Methods Program (CSM).

CSM maintains datasets in their archives at no cost to ANES or its user community, and we are grateful to them for this service.

Please be aware that datasets may not be as recent as those that appear on the ANES website, and ANES is not responsible for the SDA utility, the SDA data archives, or their use.
