EMPLOYMENT NOTES
for: Head
R
Spouse
QUESTION ADMINISTRATION:
Usually, a separate "series" of questions about employment was administered
for each type of employment status: a series of questions for working
persons, a series for retired persons, a series for the unemployed, etc.
Some questions were asked in every series. Other questions were specific
to one employment status (or to several but not all).
VARIABLES CREATED:
Until 1964 and in 1982, variables containing responses to "series"
questions also took the form of series, with a series of variables produced
separately for each type of employment status-- i.e., an 'unemployed'
series of variables, a 'retired' series of variables, etc.
In 1968-1978, common or corresponding questions from separate series of
variables were combined or "stacked" into a single set of variables which
summarized information for all individuals, that is, for every type of
employment status.
In 1980 and 1984-1988, both the separate series of variables and a
"stacked" series of variables were provided. In these years, "RV"
(below) indicates the "stacked" variable.
************
N.B.: The question flow or sequencing of questions, esp.
within the 'series' for the UNEMPLOYED/RETIRED/DISABLED
and within the 'series' for HOMEMAKERS/STUDENTS, has
varied during some years. Because an attempt was made in
the Continuity Guide to follow question sequence, a question
may appear as one entry for some years and then appear again
as another entry for other years in which the sequencing of
questions is different. Any question which appears
elsewhere (within the same 'series') in an additional entry
for other years is flagged with ## preceding the question
text. In a few instances, a question appears in three
entries for this reason.
Employment status of: Head
R
Spouse
-SUMMARY NOTES -
1980-1990: If a retired (1984 and later: or permanently disabled)
person is also presently working --regardless of
number of hours--then data are present for R in BOTH the
'working now' and 'retired/ permanently disabled' series of
questions [i.e, both past and present employment].
(1980-1982: working permanently disabled are 'working now'.)
If a homemaker/student is also presently working--regardless of
number of hours-- then data are present for R ONLY in the
'working now' series. The 'homemaker/student' series
[i.e., past employment] is restricted to homemakers/students
currently not working at all.
---
1972-1978: If currently employed in a job related to past occupation
[before retirement/disablement], then the retired/disabled
are represented in the 'working now' series of employment
vars but NOT in the 'retired/permanently disabled' series
[i.e., past employment]. If, however, the retired/disabled
person is employed in a job unrelated to past occupation,
then s/he is not represented in the 'working now' series but
is represented in the 'retired/permanently disabled' series
[past employment].
Homemakers/students who are also presently working more than 20
hours per week are represented in the "working now" series and
NOT in the 'homemaker/student' series. Homemakers/students
presently working less than 20 hours per week are represented
only in the 'homemaker/student' series and NOT in the 'working
now' series.
---
before 1972: Employment status of head/R/spouse is usually left to the
discretion of the respondent (according to R's choice of
categories specified in the question). In most cases, no
questions are asked about past employment of nonworking
homemakers or full-time students [i.e, there is no series
specifically for past employment of students/homemakers].
Persons who are laid off are not always specified as part of any
series of questions. It is possible that they are included with
'working now' OR among the unemployed when not specified. When
specified as part of a series, laid-off Rs are undefined as
permanently or temporarily laid off. They are grouped with the
unemployed in some years.
For 1956, 1958, 1960, 1964, day students working part time are
absent from the 'working now' series but night students who work
part time and homemakers who work are represented in the 'working
now' series.
For 1968, 1970 if head/R/spouse considers self mainly a homemaker,
she is coded as a homemaker in main occupation variable and any
other work is included in a variable for "second job" (listed
together with 'main' occupation in CG occupation listing); if she
considers herself as an employed person, her job is included in
the main occupation var. If head/R/spouse considers self retired
or unemployed, his/her former occupation is present in the main
occupation variable and any present work appears in "second job"
variable. If head/R/spouse is a full time student who also works
part time, s/he is coded as a student in the main occupation var
and his/her work is included in the variable for "second job"; if
head/R/spouse works full time and goes to school part time, then
his/her job is in the main occupation var and s/he is coded as a
student in the "second job" variable.
In 1962, if head/R is retired/not employed/homemaker/student, no
data has been collected about past employment. If R is wife of
head, no employment data are present.
