DEM3_GREWUP_CODED.readme

The open-ended responses to the item DEM3_GREWUP on the ANES 2012 Time Series data file were coded according to the following rules.

MENTION1 records the first location mentioned. Reported US states or territories were coded using USPS two-letter codes. If a foreign country was reported, or a city obviously located in a particular foreign country was reported, the country name is given. The name is given as used by the respondent, e.g. if the respondent entered "England" it is recorded as "ENGLAND" and not as "UK." The following entries were made when no state, country, or territory could be indicated. BLANK: No text is recorded in the field. OUTSIDE USA: Response indicates the respondent did not grow up in the United States but no further detail can be coded. Example: "I did not grow up in the US." USA: Response indicated the United States but without specifying a state. For example, "we were all over the u.s.a.", "NEW ENGLAND", and names of cities that do not exist in the respondent's current state of residence and appear to exist in multiple states. UNABLE TO CODE: This indicates a response was given but no state, country, or territory could be determined based on the response. Examples include "yes", "Army brat", "all over," and city names that exist in both the US and Mexico. Many of these responses appear to be children of a parent in the armed forces.

MENTION2 records the second location mentioned, if more than one was mentioned.

MENTION_ADDITIONAL records the number of additional locations mentioned, if more than two were mentioned.
