Important Notes on this Breakdown section

Breakdown categories are based on the following CDF variables:
Age - Recoded from VCF0103 (Respondent - Age); Gender - VCF0104 (Respondent - Gender); Race/Ethnicity - VCF0105b (Race-Ethnicity Summary, 4 categories); Education - Recoded from VCF0110 (Respondent - Education 4 categories); Region - VCF0113 (Political South/Nonsouth); Party Identification - VCF0303 (Party Identification - Summary 3 categories); Knowledge - VCF0729 (Party with House majority before Election?)

Year limitations on breakdown variables: When breaking down the results by demographic and political categories, some trends display only the subset of years (if any years at all) when a sufficient number of respondents were interviewed in the selected category (e.g., college-educated senior citizens). Roughly speaking, trends are displayed over the time period when the category sample size regularly exceeds 30 cases in the post-election survey.

General Notes on the ANES Guide to Public Opinion and Electoral Behavior

The ANES Guide is produced mostly from data in the ANES Cumulative Data File (CDF). When needed, data from Time Series studies are used.

Data used in the ANES Guide are weighted with VCF0009z [The ANES Cumulative Data File Codebook].

No Internet cases in 2012 estimates: Estimates from the 2012 ANES Time Series study are based exclusively on data from the face-to-face (FTF) interviews; Internet cases are excluded. ANES changed its methods for recruiting respondents to take Internet surveys starting in 2016, resulting in much higher response rates and improvements in data quality. Because 2012 estimates for many questions differ significantly by sample (FTF vs. Internet), much more so than in subsequent years, we present only the 2012 FTF data in the Guide. (The 2012 Internet remain valuable for many analyses; users interested in a deeper investigation of the data should download the files from the ANES Data Center and assess what is most appropriate for their own analyses.)
