                         1964 NES Time Series Study
                          NES DATASET NUMBER 1964.TV

                           Number of Cases: 1834
                          Number of Variables: 536

WEIGHT REQUIRED: None for Cross-section.
                  None for "All Black Sample".
                  V640466 for "Combined Sample".

SAMPLING NOTES: SAMPLE SELECTION IS REQUIRED
No filtering on V640003 (Type of Interview)
produces the "Combined Sample" rather than the
                  Cross-section.
                  1) Use V640003 [and V640183 Race of Respondent']
for sample selection. Users can select any
                     of the following:
                       - Cross-section - cases coded 1 or 2 in V640003
                       - "Combined sample" - all cases
                       - "All black sample" - cases coded (3 or 4 in
                          V640003) OR (1 or 2 in V640003 and 2
                          in V640183)
                  2) The black supplement alone is NOT a
                     valid sample

DATA NOTES:
    1) If black supplement cases are used in combination with
the cross-section ("combined sample"), then weighting
        must be used (see V640466).
IMPORTANT: see Sampling note 2 above.
   2) Frequencies from the codebook are for the cross-section.
   3) Variables 640423-640457 are Vote Validation (Individual Voter
        Record) vars.
   4) Variables 640422,640459-640465 are derived measures (indices).
   5) Data correction:
Case #1279 is coded 00 in V640013 (congressional district) but
          should have been coded 06.

SPECIAL THEMES AND NEW TOPICS:
First Voter Validation; included in the data file.
First use of 'feeling thermometers' (groups).

DESIGN FEATURES:
Sample includes a special supplement for black respondents (N=263).
