                           Number of Cases: 1694
                          Number of Variables: 426

WEIGHT REQUIRED: None for Cross-section with "Type 0" variables.
V700006 (integer) or V700012 (decimal) for
                      Cross-section with "Type 1" variables.
V700007 (integer) or V700013 (decimal) for
                      Cross-section with "Type 2" variables.
V700010 (integer) or V700016 (decimal) for
"Combined Sample" with "Type 0" variables.
V700008 (integer) or V700014 (decimal) for
"Combined Sample" with "Type 1" variables.
V700009 (integer) or V700015 (decimal) for
"Combined Sample" with "Type 2" variables.
V700011 (integer) or V700017 (decimal) for
"All Black Sample" with any variables.
                  SEE CODEBOOK INTRODUCTORY MATERIAL AND
                  VARIABLE DOCUMENTATION FOR MORE INFORMATION.

SAMPLING NOTES: SAMPLE SELECTION IS REQUIRED
No filtering on V700004 (Filter Variable) produces
a set of cases that includes the complete "Combined Sample"
plus a small number of ineligible voters.
                  1) Use V700004 [and V700391 Race of Respondent] for
                     for sample selection.
Users can select any of the following:
                       - Cross-section - cases coded 1,2,3 or 4 in V700004
                       - "Combined sample" - cases coded 1,2,3,4,7,8
                           in V700004
                       - "All black sample" - cases coded (7 or 8 in
                          V640003) OR (1,2,3 or 4 in V640003 and 2
                          in V700391)
                  2) The black supplement alone is NOT a
                     valid sample
                  3) Cases coded 5,6 or 9 in V700004 constitute ineligible
                     voters

DATA NOTES:
         1) All 1970 variables are identified (see codebook) as
"type 0," "type 1," or "type 2." See codebook to identify
             types of all variables.
         2) Frequencies in the codebook are frequencies for the
             cross-section, using V700012 and V700013 weights for
type 1 and type 2 variables (respectively).
         Data correction:
Case #0510 was assigned in V700018 to ICPSR state 14 but
             should have been 12.

SPECIAL THEMES AND NEW TOPICS:
Order experiment on feeling thermometer; focus on 1970 congressional
elections.

DESIGN FEATURES:
Sample includes a special supplement for black respondents (N=114). 18 and 20
year olds were interviewed, although not eligible to vote until 1972 (these
cases can be excluded). This study has two forms in order to maximize content.
