ANES Announcement: Preliminary Release of the 2024 Combined Pre- and Post-Election Dataset
April 30, 2025
Dear American National Election Studies (ANES) User Community,
We are extremely pleased to announce the preliminary release of the combined pre-election and post-election dataset for the ANES 2024 Time Series Study!
The data and documentation can be downloaded from the ANES website at:
The ANES 2024 Time Series Study features a mixed-mode design with interviews conducted by face-to-face, internet, video, phone, and paper-and-pencil modes. This preliminary release contains 5,521 respondents:
- A fresh in-person sample consisting of 1,042 pre-election interviews and 925 post-election re-interviews
- A fresh web sample consisting of 2,308 pre-election interviews and 1,969 post-election re-interviews
- An extension of the 2016-2020 ANES Panel consisting of 2,171 pre-election interviews and 2,070 post-election re-interviews with people who previously completed the ANES in 2016 and 2020
This preliminary release newly includes most post-election survey variables, as well as new administrative variables. It also includes corrections to several variables from the prior pre-election preliminary release.
Re-interviews of General Social Survey (GSS) respondents, and a survey administered to cohabiting spouses or partners of sampled individuals, will appear in a future release.
You can read more about the study design, the questions that were asked, and corrections made to previously released variables in the User Guide and Codebook.
Lastly, this preliminary release dataset serves analysts who want to start working with the data as soon as possible. Preliminary releases differ from later releases in several important ways. For instance, quality control review, summary variables, and documentation are abbreviated. Furthermore, the weights included are also preliminary and will be replaced with new weights in future releases. In particular, we are evaluating ways to refine the weights in order to match known population demographic values and electoral results.
Thank you for your use of the ANES!
