New Data Available: the ANES 2024 Message Testing Study 2 was conducted for the purpose of preliminary testing of messages to recruit participants in the ANES Time Series studies. The study measures attitudes towards groups and objectives that may be mentioned in recruitment messages, such as research, universities, and students, and includes question wording experiments.

ANES Announcement: Call for Questionnaire Ideas for the 2023 Pilot and 2024 Time Series Studies. For full consideration, ideas should be submitted to ANES by 5:00 pm Eastern Time on Friday, September 15, 2023. Earlier submissions are encouraged.


ANES Announcement: researcher wanted for our Stanford office. Work collaboratively with the study’s Principal Investigators, Associate Principal Investigators, professional staff, and research assistants.

2022


ANES Announcement: 2022 Pilot Study dataset and documentation are now available. Visit the study page to download data and documentation.

Project Update: The ANES Scanning Project has come to an end. Over 5 million pages of documentation were scanned. The ongoing log of updates can be found here.


Data Alert: The previous release of 2020 only included data for the first mention of the DEM_UNIONWHO variable. The updated dataset ‘anes_timeseries_20202_UNIONWHO.sav’ available for download from the study page, includes variables for all three possible mentions.


ANES Annoucement: Updated Cumulative Data File and new beta version of the Guide to Public Opinion. More than 100 new charts have been added along with improvements to the formatting, visualizations, and interactivity.


The ANES Advisory Board held their first meeting to begin planning for the 2024 Time Series Study.


ANES Announcement: The American National Election Studies (ANES) awarded $14 million to study 2024 elections.


ANES Announcement: Call for Questionnaire Ideas for the 2022 ANES Pilot Study. Ideas must be submitted to ANES by the end of the day on Sunday, July 31, 2022.


ANES Announcement: Joint Study Linking General Social Survey and American National Election Studies Now Available. This data release makes combining GSS and ANES possible for the first time.


A new data product was posted to the 2006 Pilot study page. The transcription of these interviews was funded by the SNF Agora Institute at the Johns Hopkins University on behalf of Andrew Perrin.


Revised variable from the MEDSRC module of the 2020 Time Series study are available for download from the study page. For more information, read the data alert.


ANES Announcement: February 2022 Updates including information about a data alert for the 2020 Time Series study and new restricted-use data files added to ICPSR’s catalog.

2021


ANES Announcement: Cumulative Data File (CDF) and additional new dataset releases now available. 214 variables in the CDF have been updated with 2020 data. Download new data from the Non-Response Follow-Up (NRFU) to the 2020 Time Series study and additional variables have been added to the 2020 Time Series study redacted open-end file.


ANES Announcement: 2020 Restricted Data and New Redacted Open-Ended Datasets. Two restricted datasets from 2020 are available from ICPSR. We are also pleased to announce redacted open-end responses are now available for download.


ANES Announcement: The Guide now updated with 2020 Time Series data. This update added data to 60 charts and their associated tables. We are pleased to have this work completed in time for the new academic semester and hope you find it helpful in your classrooms and your work.

Announcement to the American National Election Studies (ANES) User Community. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we recently made the difficult decision to eliminate face-to-face interviewing from the ANES data collection that is to occur before and after the November 2020 presidential election in the United States. Instead, we will be pursuing a mixed-mode study design that is contactless and comprised of a combination of Internet, video, and telephone interviews. Read more.

Data Alert: 2018 Pilot Study Vote Validation A supplemental data file with commercially sourced voter registration and turnout status for 2016 and 2018 has been made available. We thank Jennifer Jerit of Stony Brook University for making this possible.

A new report is available, “Comparing Face-to-face and Web Modes in the ANES 2016 Time Series Study” which appears in our Technical Reports series under Papers & Documents. This reference document was created for researchers to use to compare questions across the two modes in the 2016 Time Series Study.

Call for Questionnaire Ideas for the 2019 Pilot Survey: We invite two types of input, general suggestions about the topics or types of questions that ought to be included in the survey and suggestions of specific survey questions (or revisions of older questions).

Data Alert: 2018 Pilot Study On the initial data release, the variable inputstate has erroneous codes for respondents from Colorado and Connecticut.


Data Alert: 2016 Time Series Study V162032x variable label isn’t fully descriptive. Also, data for V162065x providing turnout-registration data for all respondents having known status, will be available in the next release.


Data Alert: Time Series Cumulative Data File VCF0702 was created using an incorrect variable.


ANES Announcement: 2018 Pilot Study is now available The data and documentation can be downloaded from the Data Center. Also available: the 2018 Pilot Study Auxiliary Unmatched Data File which provides data from an additional 277 unweighted respondents for use in methodological analysis.

New release of the auxiliary data file for the 2016 Time Series Study: the ANES 2016 Methodology File. This file includes thousands of variables concerning the 2016 data collection that will be of use for methodological analysis.


New release of the Cumulative Data File. This release includes remaining 2016 data which were previously not available. Data are now available in the Data Center.

ANES News : updates about the new 2016 Time series Address-Level Supplemental data on Voters and the new Question Search Tool.


The ANES 2016 Time Series Address-Level Supplemental Data on Voters are now available in the Data Center. These data provide voter turnout information for individuals living at the addresses that were sampled for the ANES 2016 Time Series Study, including non-respondents.


New erratum for the CDF: It has been discovered that the 1988 question on preferential hiring of blacks (V880856) is comparable to VCF0867. Data for 1988 were not included in VCF0867 due to an error in the 1988 codebook documentation for V880856. The 1988 data will be added in the next CDF release.


New erratum for the 1988 Time Series Study: Web cases in 2016 Time Series Study variable V161317 require a recoding of values as follows: code 0 to 4, code 1 to 0, code 2 to 1, code 3 to 2, and code 4 to 3.


The ANES 2016 Time Series Voter Validation Supplemental Data are now available in the Data Center.

2017


Updated data files for the ANES Recruitment Pretest Study are now available in the Data Center This update includes a post-stratification weight variable that can be used for substantive analyses on the pre-election and post-election questionnaire data.


The Methodological Disclosure Document  for the 2016 Time Series Study is now available from the study page.


Redacted open-end responses from the 2016 Time Series Study can now be downloaded from the study page.


As part of the 2008 Coding Project, data and reports for the following topics are now available: Candidate Likes/Dislikes, Election Outcome and Party Likes/Dislikes.
