Definition of Terms:

ANES TIME SERIES RDA GEOCODE VARIABLES
Census1 Year of 1st Census for which Tract/ED data are available. If Tract/ED data are available for more than 1 Census year, Census 1 represents the year of latest Census.
Census2 Year of 2nd Census for which Tract/ED data are available. If Tract/ED data are available for more than 1 Census year, Census 1 represents the year of earliest Census. (Maximum of 2 possible Census years)
Cen1Tract1 For years prior to 2008, tracts were identified at segment level rather than for exact address, and more than 1 tract could be identified with the segment. This variable is the 1st associated Tract number from Census 1.NOTE: tract variables are not ordered by likelihood of match to the segment. For later Time Series studies, tracts have been identified at address level.
Cen1Tract2 For years prior to 2008, tracts were identified at segment level rather than for exact address, and more than 1 tract could be identified with the segment. This variable is the 2nd associated Tract number from Census1.  NOTE: tract variables are not ordered by likelihood of match to the segment. Except for years 1992-1996, the maximum number of Tracts associated with a segment has been 2. For later Time Series studies, tracts have been identified at address level.
Cen1Tract3 For the 1992,1994, and 1996 Time Series studies, sample cases were drawn from a sample frame that included geocodes from the 1980 Census. The 1980 tracts associated with segments in the samples for these studies were ‘translated’ to 1990 Census tract numbers in order to provide more recent tract values.  However, because in 1990 the U.S. Census revised tract numbering, resulting in changes to the areas associated with many specific tract numbers, this ‘translation’ sometimes produced more than two 1990 tract numbers that could correspond, in full or in part, with a 1980 tract number already associated with a segment.  The maximum number of 1990 tracts identified via ‘translation’ was 8. For years 1992,1994,1996 Cen1Tract1-Cen1Tract8 are 1990 tract numbers associated with the segment; Cen2Tract1-Cen2Tract2 are the original 1980 tract numbers. NOTE: tract variables are not ordered by likelihood of match to the segment.

Cen1Tract5 SEE Cen1Tract3
Cen1Tract6 SEE Cen1Tract3
Cen1Tract7 SEE Cen1Tract3
Cen1Tract8 SEE Cen1Tract3
Cen2Tract1 For years prior to 2008, tracts were identified at segment level rather than for exact address, and more than 1 tract could be identified with the segment. This variable is the 1st associated Tract number from Census2. NOTE: tract variables are not ordered by likelihood of match to the segment. For later Time Series studies, tracts have been identified at address level. For years 1992,1994,1996, Cen2Tract1-Cen2Tract2 are the original 1980 tract numbers (SEE Cen1Tract3).
Cen2Tract2 For years prior to 2008, tracts were identified at segment level rather than for exact address, and more than 1 tract could be identified with the segment. This variable is the 2nd associated Tract number from Census2.
ED1 1st ED (Enumeration District) from Census2 associated with segments in untracted area. (Note: all areas in the U.S. have been tracted since the 1990 Census; the earliest year of Census1 is 1990).
ED2 2nd ED (Enumeration District) from Census2 associated with segments in untracted area. (Note: all areas in the U.S. have been tracted since the 1990 Census; the earliest year of Census1 is 1990).
