Study Content Highlights
In addition to content on electoral participation, voting behavior, and public opinion, the 1998 ANES contains questions in other areas such as media exposure and political knowledge. Special-interest and topical content includes a traits battery on the U.S. Congress, a series on the Clinton scandal and impeachment, and new questions on religion and politics, partial-birth abortions, school vouchers, and participation in the stock market.
Study Design Highlights
The ANES 1998 is a “mixed mode” study based on a traditional area probability sample while maximizing interviewing by telephone. Initial face-to-face contact was made with as many households as possible. Appointments were then scheduled for telephone interviews with the selected respondent. Face-to-face interviews were conducted only with those respondents unable or unwilling to be interviewed by phone. Telephone respondents were provided with a ballot card and respondent booklet prior to the interview whenever possible, and question wordings in the Computer Assisted Interviewing (CAI) instrument were almost entirely undifferentiated by mode.
Administration of the post-election interview began immediately after the November 3 elections, and continued until December 30. The average interview length was 66 minutes, and 1,281 completions were yielded from 2,003 eligible in the sample. Randomization was employed for question order within batteries and for assignment of alternative ordering of candidate and party names in question texts, as well as for selection of half-samples that were used to reduce overall interview length.
Weights Summary
V980002 is a full-sample weight which is the product of the household non-response adjustment factor, the within-household selection weight (number of eligible persons), and a post-stratification adjustment factor by age and education.
