ANES Announcement: Preliminary Release of the 2024 Pre-Election Data
Dear American National Election Studies (ANES) User Community,
We are extremely pleased to announce the preliminary release of pre-election data for the ANES 2024 Time Series Study.
The data and documentation can be downloaded from the study page at: https://electionstudies.org/data-center/2024-time-series-study/
This preliminary release contains a total of 3,349 pre-election interviews from a fresh in-person sample (1,042 interviews) and a fresh web sample (2,307 interviews). Re-interviews of 2016-2020 ANES panel respondents and re-interviews of General Social Survey (GSS) respondents will appear in a future release. You can read more about the study design in the User Guide and Codebook.
In addition to long-standing ANES content, the 2024 study offers new content on the following topics: election integrity, democratic norms, attitudes toward higher education, traits that might disqualify candidates from public office, attitudes about conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, job satisfaction, MENA descent, disability and mental health, student debt, gender identity, attitudes on changes to the Democratic ticket, political socialization of children, issue importance and issue ownership, an adaptive voter validation module, and expanded instrumentation on abortion attitudes.
This preliminary release serves analysts who want to start working with the pre-election data as soon as possible. Data in the preliminary release differs from final ANES data releases in several important ways. For instance, quality control review, summary variables, and documentation are abbreviated. Furthermore, the weights included in this dataset release are preliminary and will be replaced with new weights in future releases. In particular, we are evaluating ways to refine the weights in order to match known population demographic values and electoral results.
The post-election field period has just closed; preparations for the preliminary post-election data release will begin shortly. Follow us on social media or watch for ANES email to receive updates.
Thank you for your use of the ANES!
Best wishes,
The ANES project
